Walk A Thon for Shaun with Butterfly Graphic

MAY 16, 2017

We have a student at our school, ten year old Shaun Hamilton, who was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia when he was just 18 months old. Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is a disease in which the bone marrow does not make enough blood cells for the body. ... The 3 types of blood cells your body needs are: red blood cells (to carry oxygen), white blood cells (to fight infection), and platelets (to control bleeding).

Shaun just underwent his second bone marrow transplant as well as a stem cell transplant this past January. His older brother, Malik, an 8th grader at our school was his donor all three times. Shaun was hospitalized for four months, just recently getting discharged on March 10, 2017. Shaun missed half of last year’s school year (his 4th grade year) and all of 5th grade (this current school year.)  He will likely return to school in January of 2018, a complete year after his final bone marrow and stem cell transplants.

Because of Shaun’s many health issues, his mother, Gloria Mesquias, has not been able to work.  She spent the entire four months at Phoenix Children’s Hospital by Shaun’s side, and continues to take him to his mandatory follow-up appointments, two and three times a week. She is a single mom who is struggling financially to meet the needs of her family, all while staying positive for Shaun and his siblings, Malik, age 14 and Nadia, age 5.

In our efforts to support Shaun and his family during this difficult time, our school has decided to do a Walk-a-Thon, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Hamilton-Mesquias family.  We are asking our families to sponsor their students and then, as an incentive to raise more money, reward them in a variety of ways, (by the lap, mile, most sponsors, most money raised, etc..) We are looking for businesses to donate gift cards, snacks, water or any other donation that would benefit the Walk-a-Thon as well as Shaun and his family.

Donors will be recognized at the entrance of our event, which will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, via a large bulletin board, during school announcements, on our website, and in our weekly newsletter which is distributed to every family in the entire school. All donations will be used to directly benefit the Hamilton-Mesquias family.

We hope that your company will consider our request and is able to help us make this year’s Walk-a-Thon fundraiser a huge success. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
