In April 2016, the Governing Board approved a price increase for full priced lunches. The determining factor in this decision is the adoption of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (Public Law 111-296) which reads:
  • Effective July 1, 2011, section 205 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires school food authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program to provide the same level of support for lunches served to the students who are not eligible for free or reduced price lunches served to students eligible for free lunches.
  • In comparing the average price charged for lunches served to the students not eligible for free or reduced price lunches to the difference between the higher Federal reimbursements provided for free lunches and the lower Federal reimbursements provided for paid lunches, we get the increase required to comply with the Paid Lunch Equity.

Liberty Elementary School District wants to create the least impact to families while assuring compliance with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Act. In using the Paid Lunch Equity calculation to determine the price increase necessary to meet the required adjustment, the required increase is 0.10 per paid lunch.

As a result of the adoption of the Act and the price increase, it will allow us to maintain nutritious food options and more opportunities to learn about making healthy food choices.
